Description / Details
Beaked willow is one of the most common and widespread willow species across Alberta. Like all willows, beaked willow is sun loving and is well adapted to live near water: it can handle annual flooding, and its deep, binding roots help to stabilize the banks of water bodies. However, beaked willow is unique among the willows in that it can also survive in more upland sites with average levels of moisture. Beaked willow is also among the taller of the willow species, growing up to 10 meters on moist, fertile, sunny sites.
Beaked willow provides excellent, long-lasting pollen and nectar resources for pollinators early in the season. It also provides high quality forage for livestock and wildlife. Its wood does not grow as straight as other willow species and therefore is less commonly used for basket weaving and other crafts.
Beaked willow’s fast growth rate, large size, adaptability and wildlife value make it a great addition to Eco-Buffers in average to wet areas across the province. It is also highly recommended for riparian buffers. Like all willows, beaked willow grows well from cuttings (refer to AWES’ Stem Cuttings factsheet).
