Yellowhead county and the Stewardship Alliance for Conservation Agriculture (SACA) hosted Lake Health day at Shiningbank Lake August 23, 2019.
Education tables were set up by the West Central Forage Association, Alberta Bear Smart, Agroforestry and Woodlot Extension Society (AWES), Alberta Environment and Parks, and the Alberta Lake Management Society (ALMS) to display information materials relating to lake health, riparian management, agricultural services and conservation efforts available to Yellowhead County.
The county is hoping to educate the community on the impacts of land management on the health of Shiningbank Lake, concepts that can be applied to other lake systems across Alberta. Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria blooms are becoming increasingly problematic araound lakes where vegetation has been removed or reduced, where agricultural/turf grass chemicals are used in high concentrations, where high levels of sediment are being washed into lakes, and where septic systems are inadequate or damaged and begin to leach into the waterway.
